Questioning the Duggars

So, there have been a ton of articles on both sides of the story on the Duggar's and the recent revelation that Josh Duggar (the oldest son if 19) molested 5 girls when he was fourteen, 4 of them being his sisters. I then got into a discussion with fellow christians about defending him and what is appropriate and Biblically accurate when it comes to this sort of thing, and how as christians, how we should respond.

A little on my background. I have worked with children ages 2-20 who have been sexually abused and as a result have had severe behavioral and psychological damage. These are the extreme cases with kids that ended up in a Residential Treatment Center and Therapeutic Foster Care. So I have seen the damage that this can do, as well as working with teenage perpetrators as well. I also am an evangelical Christian, who believes that the Bible is true and that Jesus Christ is my savior.  I am a mother of three and have been married to an amazing man for 12 years this July. So I have experience on both sides of the spectrum.

First off, I do not blame Josh. He was fourteen at the time, and while that does not excuse any of his actions, he has been honest with who he needs to be honest with, and has asked for forgiveness. There really is nothing more that he could have done, at the time, with the way that his parents handled it. As a christian, if he has asked for forgiveness and done all he could, then he is forgiven. End of story, his sin is no worse than anyone else's, however, much more public.

What I have a problem with is the way that his parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, handled it.

This is the most objective piece I can find about the timeline of what happened: In Touch Weekly
This did not sit right with me for so many reasons, but the way the Duggar parents have handled and did handle this whole thing, did not scream christian to me. If you honestly think about what you would have done as a christian, if your older son was molesting your daughters in their sleep, for over a year, I doubt that anyone would have waited to report it. I have been deeply concerned about fellow christians who have stated that this is just curiosity, and they wouldn't have wanted to be put in jail for their curiosity when they were 12. Christians as a whole need to educate themselves on this topic, because it related to our children, their safety and innocence.

Many perpetrators are juveniles themselves, as I have seen in my work. As many as one third of perpetrators are juveniles. And most perpetrators are someone your family knows well. This is not a one time curiosity of innocent play. This was repeated molestation (some of which would have been counted as felonies) to young girls in their sleep (on most of the occasions). I will not go into the details here, as you can read it in the In Touch Weekly article. But Christians stating that this was a "normal" childhood experience are not forgiving Josh for his transgressions, but they are excusing it. That is not what Christ has called us to do, we are to call sin a sin, and that is what calls people to Christ, not excusing his sin and pretending that it wasn't as bad as it has been portrayed. Please when you are discussing this, don't think about Josh's experience in this, think of his victims, his own sisters and what they have gone through. Like I said above I don't think we need to crucify Josh, but we are forgetting who the victims are.

And it seems that so are the parents. All the Duggars have said is that a horrible thing happened and that it brought them closer to God. Josh has stated that he and his victims received counseling after this occurred but there has yet to be any evidence given to support this claim. In fact as you can see in the police records, Jim Bob lied to authorities about the "treatment" that Josh received, and it was only when Michelle was questioned that the "treatment" was really working for a friend of theirs. Now, I know treatment is extremely touchy for some christians. But when there is molestation that occurs multiple times in your home, it is time to request help from professionals. And really only christian therapy would work, but outside help from a professional is absolutely critical, not only for Josh but for his victims. I got called out on this by christians that stated if he was raised in a christian home, he would not need help because coming to Christ is the only way to be truly forgiven and to start a new life. I fully agree with this, but it made me question what kind of home he was living in to do this in the first place. Perpetrators don't do this on their accord. Something has to be taught or done to them to do so many horrible things to young girls, especially his sisters.

So, I looked into it more closely, and I am here to tell you friends that the Duggars are not just fundamentalist Christians. They subscribe to some abusive and unbiblical beliefs. This explains why they acted in such a way after their son was found molesting their daughters. I obtained the information of what they believe and their resources for how they run their home directly from their blog.  My first case for them veering from the Bible is their stated church, the Independent Baptists. While most of what they believe is christian, there is much legalism that has stepped out of it, which leads people to believe that works can save them instead of Jesus alone. For more information on what they believe and why it is different that Evangelical Christianity look Here. As you can see they add much to the Bible about what it means to be a Christian and take the freedom that is able to be found in Christ out of the equation. The correct response that a truly Biblical church needs to have is found at by Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. He wrote the following about the correct response not only to the perpetrator but more so to the victims and the correct intervention that should have occurred.

Second I looked into their homeschool curriculum that has been under much scrutiny. They subscribe to the Advanced Training Institute for homeschool which in itself has many horrible practices, and pretty much blames the victim of any sexual misconduct on the female. You can see the whole article about this here. Not only is this pretty much a cult, but it also has horrible parenting practices like "blanket training" which is associated with the book "To Train up a Child". This book has lead to deaths of many young children due to the corporal punishment that it endorses.

I am stating all of this to shows that we, as christians who believe in the Bible, and the simple gift of salvation, cannot in anyway defend the Duggars, how they handled this situation, or the "additions" that they have added to the Bible. To defend these people is stating that the truth does not matter, that the Bible does not teach what it says, that sexual immoralities are the same sin for the victims as the perpetrator, and that there is no freedom found in Christ. We are called to show our children God's love, does that mean no rules? Of course not, but neither does it mean to whip them until they sit on a blanket, quietly, or excuse their sexual molestation of their siblings. God's love to a child means boundaries, seeing who God has made them to be, and teaching them who God is so they can appreciate the gift of salvation that has been given to them if they accept it.

That much more

"God has been revealing himself to me, through my kids over and over and over again. I see a picture of how He loves us through how I love my children. Knowing that it's that much more, and more than I can ever grasp, God's character is amazing."

I know that we are right where we are supposed to be

Technically not in Salt Lake anymore, but this was too amazing not to share

We left Utah on August 12th and arrived in Georgia on August 18th. Before, during, and since then, the Lord has been reconfirming to us that this has all been orchestrated by Him. I could probably share a different story every other day, but I have refrained because my head is still just reeling from the past two and a half months of our lives. However, this one is so fresh and I want to share what the Lord did to reassure us this weekend.

I attended a women's conference at a church about 45 minutes from where we are staying. I went with a group of women from our new home church. When I was registered to attend several weeks ago, I didn't know that the guest speaker was Karyn Johnson from the House of Ruth (adoption) ministry in Downey, California. Memories flooded back from the hardest year of our lives when I heard that name. You see, in 2006, after two years of trying to have a baby, we suffered two miscarriages within six months of each other, the last being in October. Two months later, just days before Christmas, we received a phone call that connected us with Karyn. She had a very special situation with a birth mother who specifically needed an adoptive family in Utah. Without going into all the details, we were one of two couples being considered. We were excited over the thought that maybe this would be the way God would answer our prayers to have children! We decided that if we were chosen, we would name the baby boy Malachi. You can imagine the depth of despair we faced when we found out that we were not chosen.

We were broken and we were hurting. I just didn't understand why a loving God would allow such heartbreak into our lives over and over again. I was so desperate for a child of my own that I didn't stop to look at all of the loving relationships I had all around me. I went into a depression that I didn't want to admit that I had. I shut down and pushed people away. I was truly a person that was the unloveliest of the unlovely.

Over the course of the next several months, we went through a barrage of testing to see what could be wrong with us. Although we did receive some answers from the medical field, we never received peace. In August of 2007, we were done with this fight. We were physically, mentally, and spiritually broken. We made the decision to stop forcing the situation and to just trust God's plan for our lives. Over the course of the next year, the Lord truly released me from the unhealthy obsession I had with having a baby. I didn't give up hope, but I finally smashed that idol and had truly found peace. A year after we had let go of what we thought was our control, in August of 2008, we discovered that I was pregnant with our miracle baby, Judah. She was born in April of 2009.

Over the years, I have still had questions in my mind as to why we had to go through the things we did, but they say that hindsight is 20/20, right? I received a glimpse of that answer yesterday, in regards to the baby we wanted to adopt all those years ago.

I was invited into a room with the pastor's wives where we ate lunch. I sat directly across from Karyn and was having an internal debate on whether or not I should even mention to her that our paths had crossed back in 2006. I got up the nerve and nonchalantly reminded her of our brief time of phone communication back then. She sat back in her chair with a look of confusion on her face. I started to turn red because I felt horrible that I had put her on the spot. I could see the wheels turning in her head as she kept looking at my name tag and then looking at my face. Certainly, she didn't remember me and was wracking her brain trying to place me. Without looking away from me, she yanked on her friend's arm who had come with her to the conference from California. She said, "Connie, do you remember the couple from Utah that was being considered to adopt Bonisha's baby?" Connie looked at her and said, "Well yes! Of course I do!" Karyn pointed across the table at me and said, "This is the woman, Mandy." Connie sat down in her chair and told me that she is Bonisha's mother. We all just stared at each other in amazement!

Connie filled me in on the events that had taken place, and then told me that before Bonisha had handed her newborn baby over to the adoptive parents, she had named him Malachi. When I told them that Malachi was the name we had chosen for him as well, we all got goose bumps. Oh, just wait! It gets better!!! I told them that God had granted the desire of our hearts and gave us two children, the first being named Judah, which means "praise." Before I could even tell them our son's name, their jaws dropped to the table. The adoptive parents changed Malachi's name. Can you guess? They named him Judah. I even got to see a picture of him!

We never expected that this story would have ever come full circle, but our loving Shepherd poured out his love on us once again to reconfirm to us that He guided us here. That meeting wouldn't have taken place if the Lord hadn't brought us here when He did. I just know that He was looking in on our time together yesterday with a loving smile on His face, saying, "You see, my child? I DO have plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future."

We are truly, truly, truly blessed. And I know that we are right where we are supposed to be.

Him not me

"As a Christian, I realize I am one only by God's grace. Jesus is not my savior because I'm good. He's my savior because He is good. My sin separated me from God, and God showed grace by sending Jesus to atone for and take away my sin so I can have a relationship with Him and call my self a "Christian" - a follower of Jesus Christ. My life is changed, and I'm no longer controlled by sin, but filled with the Spirit of God and free to be the man God planned for me to become."

The Search for Peace

I have been pondering Robin Williams death like most of America since it happened. It is truly heartbreaking. I think one of the things that is so hard for most of America to understand is how can someone who has everything that this world has to offer, who lead a good life, and helped so many people in so many different ways not find peace and fulfillment?

The quote that struck me most about the article below is the constant fear that he was living in. I think everyone can relate to that, constant fear and having to be on constant watch not to let the world get the better of you. However, there is hope, you don't need to live in constant fear, defeat, or depression. Jesus died so that He can fill that need you have. God made these needs in us so that we can turn to Him and be completely fulfilled, not just appeased, so that we can have joy in the midst of sorrow, and so that we can have that peace in the midst of a world that seems to offer no solace for the weary.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
